Looking for a circuit board that can withstand the toughest conditions? Read on to learn more about this in this blog post.

What is FR4 PCB?

An FR4 PCB is a type of circuit board that is commonly seen in electrical devices. “FR4”, or “Flame Retardant 4,” refers to the substance that was used to construct the board. This composite material is constructed from woven fiberglass cloth that is sealed with epoxy resin.
The board is strengthened by fiberglass, which also makes it easy to handle tension without breaking. Conversely, the epoxy resin binder provides the board’s insulating qualities and acts as a kind of glue to hold all the parts together.
The portion of a device that holds other electronic parts, including chips, is called the “Printed Circuit Board” (PCB). Commonplace electronics like computers, cellphones, and autos all use the FR4 PCB board.

4 Key Properties of FR4 PCB

4 Key Properties of FR4 PCB

It displays key properties that allow them to perform maximally in various environmental conditions. Below are the reasons why these versatile boards are the backbone of modern technology:

  1. High Mechanical Strength
Some frequently used equipment is subject to vibration and sometimes shock. The mechanical strength of FR4 PCB means they withstand stress without breaking. They are known for their robustness and can be trusted for various applications.
  2. Electrical Insulation
With excellent electrical insulation, unwanted electrical connections and the risk of short circuits will be contained. Excellent electrical insulation is provided by the epoxy resin in FR4 PCBs. Because of this, FR4 is also a material of choice for high-voltage and high-frequency applications.
  3. Thermal Stability
As we all know, electronic equipment, such as computers and power electronics, generates a lot of heat. It boards can retain their properties over a broad temperature range. A key advantage is that they do so without losing its insulating properties.
  4. Moisture Resistance
Moisture resistance is important for devices used in humid humid or wet environments. FR4 is highly resistant to moisture, they prevent water absorption that can lead to electrical failures. This resistance helps in maintaining the PCB’s performance and longevity.

Types of FR4 PCBs

Types of FR4 PCBs

FR4 PCBs can be categorized based on the number of layers of conductive material they contain. Each type has specific uses depending on the requirements of the electronic device. Below are the three kinds of FR4 PCBs:

  • Single-layer PCBs
PCBs with a single layer On one side of the board, these PCBs have a single layer of conductive material, usually copper. They are frequently employed in low-density, simpler applications.
  • Double-layer PCBs
PCBs with a second layer A double-layer printed circuit board (PCB) has conductive material covering both sides and is used to electrically connect the layers. They work well with more intricate circuits.
  • Multilayer PCBs
Three or more layers of conductive material sandwiched between insulating layers make up a multilayer printed circuit board. These levels are all connected.

For premium single-layer, double-layer, and multilayer FR4 PCBs, work with LHD PCB. LHD PCB offers reliable, reasonably priced, and long-lasting FR4 PCBs.
